Word Search: A Haiku

Should I search for new

Words to say old things, or search

For new things to say?.

by Ann Wilmer-Lasky

(2/27/26)

My Time to invent a new voice? Or should I re-invigorate the old? Maybe a little of both. Now more than ever, I am determined to concentrate o my writing.

The world outside has not gotten any better. In fact, it has gotten much worse. We still have the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The problems with Irsrael and Gaza have not been solved. And now we are engaged in a war with Iran. Oh, I almost forgot Venezuela. Who knows where it will all end and what the results  will be?

In the meantime, those of us not actually involved in the conflicts still have to live our lives. We cannot hold our breath and wait for it all to end. We have to go on with our lives and maintain some sort of normalcy. Not exactly a piece of cake.

The winter here in the Springs has remained relatively mild. I certainly won’t complain about that, considering the northeast has been brutalized by Mother Nature. I’m looking out from my patio right now, and there is snow on the mountaintops. The clouds are white and fluffy, and the sun is shining. It’s in the mid 50’s. I’m loving it!

I’m in the process of collecting my writings from my dystopian younger years. I will share a sample here soon. I will publish that collection soon also.

Sam Rock may snare Marie Delacroix and her misguided ravens in the near future. (or not) Sentia is anxious to share her recent ancestry. And my Haiku are itching to be collected in another chapbook.

Then there’s Eldreth, demanding of me the same as the Pope demanded of Michelangelo, “When will you make an end to It?” To which the artist answered, “When I am finished!”

Somehow, I don’t think Eldreth would accept that answer. He has another task for me also. Since my late son, Vernon Ray Wilmer, Jr. gave him and his companions life, he suggests I contribute part of my earnings from the books he illustrated to a suicide prevention group, a worthy cause, indeed.

I told Eldreth I would go one step further. This year, I will donate a dollar from every book of mine sold to a sucide prevention organization. Except for “Climate In Crisis” which is dedicated to the environment.

And since this is the year of the “Fire Horse”, I’d better get mounted up and gallop my way through these projects befoe I ride off into the sunset.

As always, I welcome your reactions and responses to any of my blogs. I love to hear from my readers. Also, here are links to my Amazon, Twitter and Facebook pages, if you care to share your thoughts with me there or look for any publication announcements, and there will be announcements.

It is now March. I sure hope it goes out like a lamb, not only weather-wise, but conflict-wise also. I shall endeavor to write more and watch less news – except fot the Nancy Guthrie disappearance. I echo everyone’s sentiments, “BRING HER HOME!”

Sequestered: A Haiku

Time to retire to

My garret, sharpen my quill,

Let the world go by.

by Ann Wilmer-Lasky

(1/29/26)

My fictional worlds beckon me; the real world repels me. My life has gotten better for sure, but the world out there has not. Although I do not have an actual “garret”, I will tune the world out as much as I can and concentrate much more on my writing.

I find I am reasonabably healthy for an 82 year old woman. My situation is stable, and I am settling well into my new envirnonment. I finally got my new Colorado ID, and I’m happy as a lark. (With everything except the picture, of course) It seems they do not charge 82 year old old ladies for this service. Thank you, Colorado. That is so nice of you.

This winter, it seems, has  has been uncommonly mild. With most of the country uncommonly bitter cold and stormy, I will gladly take the mildness. Athough my daughter says we may still get some wicked weather in March.

I won’t even comment on the state the country and the world are in right now. I just keep praying for kinder and gentler days. In the meantime, the best I can do is shut off the news, play some classical music and write to my heart’s content.

Wow! That actually sounds great! I’ll have to remember that! (Smiling now) It’s amazing how good thoughts can raise one’s spirits. I have even gotten back in touch with my characters.

Sam Rock (The Seasons of Sam Rock) has informed me that after I finish his sequel with Marie Delacroix (this month for sure), I owe him a final story of how he got kicked off the police force in the first place and became a detective.

Sentia (The Chronicles of Aqueria: Blood Moon Treachery) has her arms folded, and she’s tapping her foot. She is demanding her sequel and the prequel of life before Dhavin and his people came into it.

I even have poems (written and unwritten) screaming at me, demanding their release into the ether. I cannot deny them much longer. I know the words will not change the world, but they will at least let the world know what I think about it – at times kind and encouraging, but for the most part, cruel and self-absorbed. I would love to at least soften some of that.

As always, I welcome your reactions and responses to any of my blogs. I love to hear from my readers. Also, here are links to my Amazon, Twitter and Facebook pages, if you care to share your thoughts with me there or look for any publication announcements, and there will be announcements.

Today is the 1st of February. On the 17th, it becomes the Chinese New Year. This will be “Year of the Fire Horse”:. I intend to make the best of it.

I used to raise, train and show Appaloosa horses in an earlier lifetime. I was thappy then.

Hope to rekindle that happiness and the fiery spirit of the horse to help me along.;

“Happy New Year!”

New Dawn Rising: A Haiku

As this year closes

May we bury the darkness

And move toward the light.

by Ann Wilmer-Lasky

(12/27/25)

I insiste!! 22025 was such a bleak year. I am glad it’s gone. I certainly will have a better year in 2026. The last on was my worst ever. Not much can surpass it.

This year, I will concentrate on my passion. I started the day writing. An old adage says whatever you do on New Year’s Day you will do all year long. I’m all for that!

I’m hoping the world comes to peace with itself. But, if it doesn’t, I still plan on being happy in my own little world. I feel I deserve it. I will not stop being aware of what’s happening out there. I will simply be aware and live my own life as best I can.

Thus, in putting this year behind, I can move on: new new home, new surroundings. I’m actually a stranger in a strange land, having moved from the high desert of Roswell to the Colorado mountains. It was quite an adventure. Although it seems I can breathe just fine at high altitude now.

I plan on completing many projects this year – some old and some new – those crying to yet live and those anxious to be born. (Guess I still have that poetic edge.)

I will need to work on at least two projects at a time. At least that should keep everything fresh. I will need to reconnect with my characters and see what they have been up to while I’ve been “away”. And I’ll need to meet some new characters as well and get acquainted with them.

Should be fun, slipping in and out of their worlds. I’ll spend less time in mine, but that’s just fine with me.

I’ll probably be revamping all my social media accounts. I’ve noticed I haven’t changed anything, including pictures, for a long time.I may not change the photos though, since I am much more the strange “old” lady and I wouldn’t want to scare anyone.

I will upgrade my sites and rework my advertising program. My characters are demanding a better light to shine under. I owe them at least that.

As always, I welcome your reactions and responses to any of my blogs. I love to hear from my readers. Also, here are links to my Amazon, Twitter and Facebook pages, if you care to share your thoughts with me there or look for any publication announcements, and there will be announcements.
